Despite another incredible performance by Wilyer Abreu, the Red Sox fell to the Rangers 4-1. The Red Sox top bats have yet to warm up to the new season costing them in big moments.
Down 3 with one out, bases loaded, and the top of the order; the Red Sox failed to capitalize. Dever’s swung for his fourth strike out of the game followed by a Bregman ground out to snatch the opportunity. Through the first two games of the season, Boston’s top five have gone 2-31. Devers in particular has been shockingly cold.
Following a massive extension and some off-season drama sounding his move to DH. He maybe protesting his new designation by not hitting. Starting an abysmal 0-8 with 7 strike outs. Devers looks uncomfortable at the plate and pulling his swings.
Although it looks as he has lost confidence on the plate, he remains optimistic his play will change.
“It’s only been two games. I feel comfortable at the plate, I feel good. I haven’t hit the ball but I feel good. It’s only been two games and I think everything will change.”
Manager Alexa Cora also remains unfazed by the cold start of his star saying:
“He’s gonna keep working. That’s what he’s been doing the whole time, he’ll be alright.”
Devers has struggled early in seasons past. Going 0-13 in 2021 before launching 37 homers that year. If he can replicate that the Sox should be in for a good year as despite the loss and the struggles up top, there is much to smile about. The defense has looked fantastic with both Ceddanne Rafaela and Bregman making fantastic plays.
Kristian Campbell knocked in two more hits to start his career, and Wilyer Abreu continued his early MVP campaign going 2-3 with an RBI that was the Sox lone score. The bull pen managed to keep things in order not allowing a single run or walk between Weissert and Berardino although it was only 2.1 inning shared between them. The Sox will be back in Arlington for their 3rd game of their series at 7:05 P.M. tomorrow, that can be streamed on NESN.
